This course explores the principles, strategies, and practices that enable communities to gain control over the factors that shape their social, economic, and cultural well-being. Through a blend of theory and practical application, students examine how collective action, leadership development, resource mobilization, and participatory decision-making strengthen community capacity.
The course covers topics such as power dynamics, advocacy, social justice, asset-based community development, and the role of organizations in fostering empowerment. Students engage in case studies, collaborative projects, and field-based learning to develop skills in community assessment, facilitation, project planning, and inclusive engagement.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to design and evaluate empowerment initiatives, support community-led change, and apply ethical, culturally responsive approaches to working with diverse populations.
